History of NED

The National Equine Database (NED) is a collaborative project between Defra and the horse industry. Defra needed a database (NED) to hold details of all equines with passports to fulfil the requirements of European Union legislation and the horse industry needed a public national database (NED Online) so that information on all UK equines could be held in a central location for everyone to view.

NED has been in operation since 2006 and is the system that equine Passport Issuing Organisations (PIOs) have been using to hold the data for all the passports they have issued. The public cannot see this part of the site.

The public site, NED Online, was launched in November 2008. It is the central location for information on all equines born or resident in the UK with a UK passport as well as their pedigree, performance, evaluation and grading data (where provided).

NED is governed by a company called NED Ltd which is supported and guided by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), a Chief Executive Officer, a team of voluntary Directors and a small team of staff who all look after the running, development and promotion of NED Online.

If you would like further information about NED or NED Online, please view our FAQ section.
